This Meetup is a spin-off of the Group's recent viewing of Drew Barrymore's "Whip It".

Gotham Girls Roller Derby-Mission
Founded in 2003, and first bouting in 2004, Gotham Girls Roller Derby is New York City’s only all-female, do-it-yourself (DIY), skater-operated roller derby league. The league is comprised of strong, diverse, and independent women from the world's biggest, baddest city.
As a 501c3 non-profit organization, GGRD is committed to fostering serious competition on a national and international level, developing amateur athletes for competition, and promoting the physical and mental strength and independent spirit of amateur female athletes.
The skaters work tirelessly - both on the track and off - to represent the greatest city in the world at home and on the road, competing at the highest levels of gameplay through the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

Gotham Girls Roller Derby-Composition
The league is made up of four home teams which play within the league (the Bronx Gridlock, Brooklyn Bombshells, Manhattan Mayhem, and Queens of Pain). At times these teams compete with member teams from other WFTDA leagues.
The league is also home to inter-league competition teams: the Wall Street Traitors and the Gotham Girls All-Stars. These teams are compiled of league skaters from all four home teams and compete against other leagues. The Gotham Girls All-Stars represent the league in sanctioned WFTDA inter-league competitions that count towards WFTDA national rankings.
The league's rookies (the "Meatpacking District") also occasionally compete in matchups against regional foes.

The Championship Bout
The two best teams over the GGRD's regular season face off for the title!
The Bronx Gridlock (3-0) battle the Manhattan Mayhem (2-1) for the 2009 GGRD Championship.

This Meetup complemented our viewing of "Whip It" a few weeks ago. The bout was was well-organized and produced, featuring tight security and crowded but ample seating. It provided me with an opportunity to better understand the game's scoring system and tactics and appreciate how the players can use size and speed to their advantage. The Gridlock and Mayhem were tough competitors, knocking each other for each precious point until the final buzzer. I enjoyed being part of the crowd cheering them on. The pizza at Patsy's 69th St location was delicious. My thanks go to Chris for suggesting the extra garlic.
    •  A delightful fusion of Tank Girl meets a Lower East Side tattoo parlour crossed with a healthy helping of post-feminist riot girrl chic. It kicked proverbial bottom, sorry arse.
    •  i had never seen a roller derby before, so i thought it was interesting to watch the strategies the women use. thanks, david, for finding this.
