Summary
RATING: R for some disturbing content involving violence and sexuality

Starring Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Tukur, Theo Trebs, and Michael Schenk

A village in Protestant northern Germany. 1913-1914. On the eve of World War I. The story of the children and teenagers of a choir run by the village schoolteacher, and their families: the baron, the steward, the pastor, the doctor, the midwife, the tenant farmers. Strange accidents occur and gradually take on the character of a punishment ritual. Who is behind it all? The village schoolteacher observes, investigates and little by little discovers the incredible truth. Are we being asked to consider whether these events heralded something that would explode years later with the rise of Nazi Germany? Did these events contain the germs of the tragedies that followed?        I agree with everything that was posted thus far, so don't have anything else to add. I also was surprised by someone's quick departure in the middle of the film...I hope the reason was his strong dislike for the film rather than his not feeling well.
    • Line Producer
I second what Natalie said. I understood the point he was trying to convey about rigid belief systems and ideas and their impact. Yet, the message was not powerful enough. The acting and cinematography were superb. Much, much too long . Not sure what it is...but something was amiss. The way he showed a town almost gone mad with evil, malice and violence smacked of a social commentary on fascism. And some parts did effectively convey how some stoic, stern rigid values of church, family and community can almost engender evil and/or fascism . Yet this movie was so overhyped. And I was disappointed ultimately. For whatever reason, it lacked the cohesion its director had, I believe, intended.
    •  well, i had very mixed feelings about the movie. it was very well made, but i didn't feel it had a strong emotional impact. also, one person in the group just got up and left the movie, and didn't even say anything to anybody.......he just got up and didn't come back.
