Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, A Single Man, is the story of George Falconer, a 52 year old British college professor who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim. George dwells on the past and cannot see his future as we follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after Jim. George is consoled by his closest friend Charley, a 48 year old beauty who is wrestling with her own questions about the future. A young student of George’s, Kenny, who is coming to terms with his true nature, stalks George as he feels in him a kindred spirit. (The Weinstein Company)

This film is worth viewing because it treats gay relationships and serious themes-love and loss-in a mature, reflective, unsensationalistic manner. It effectively portrays how objects and sensory experiences trigger memories and the erotic and emotional connections that people establish in the course of a day. Colin Firth dominates the film, appearing in most, if not all, of its scenes. He sets aside his characteristic performances in romantic comedies and costume dramas and subtly reveals the many facets of his character's working, social and emotional life. The film's music, cinematography, production design and costumes are elegant and stylish. "A Single Man" is marred by some abrupt shifts in tone and borders on being almost too "arty", but it is far more substantial and thought-provoking than many of the films that I have viewed in recent months.
